Needles Highway, SC - July 2003

This was a daytrip along the Needles Highway. Throughout the area you can see towering rock formations such as Cathedral Spires and the Needles from afar, but a closer look is required

Getting closer!

There are many tunnels in the area around Custer but I thing this one takes the cake!

And this is what inspires the drive to get a close-up look.

Across the highway from Bismarck Lake campground was Stockade Lake. What a great place to kayak on a calm day. This lake is known for its largemouth bass but all I caught were a northern pike and a small bass. The 1.5 mile trail through a ponderosa pine forest on a rocky hillside climbed to 5200' and provided fabulous views.
