Gonzales, Tx - Nov 23, 2003

Gonzales was established by Empresario Green DeWitt in August, 1825, near the junction of the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers. It was the capital of DeWitt's Colony.

In 1831 the Mexican government gave the settlers a small brass or bronze cannon for protection from the Indians. Later Mexico demanded that the cannon be returned. A corporal and five Mexican soldiers were sent with an ox cart to get the cannon. When this request was refused, officials sent 100 mounted soldiers to take the cannon.

The Texans crossed the river with the cannon over which flew a flag with a replica of the cannon on it and the slogan "Come and Take It!" They fired at the Mexicans. This was considered the first shot of the Texas Revolution for Texas' independence on Oct. 2, 1835. The cannon is in the Gonzales Memorial Museum.

The driving tour of old homes in Gonzales led past many historic houses.
