Altus, AR - May 2003

From Beaver Lake it was a twisting drive down the Pig Trail, aka 23 to Ozark, AR. The Pig Trail is the backroad we former University of Arkansas Razorbacks sometimes took home. It has it's share of hairpin curves. The Aux Arc Corps of Engineer campground near Russellville was a new surprise for me. This is a delightful campground along the banks of the Arkansas River.

I had always heard of Weiderker's Winery in Altus and now was the time to visit. I didn't realize there were also other wineries in the area.

The view from the top of the hill at Weiderkehr was magnicent. Who knew Arkansas grew so many grapes.

I am especially fond of small towns and found Altus to be delightful. A visit to the museum was a treat where I learned the history of the area.

Altus was a coal mining community. This statue in the city park pays respect to the coal miners.

From Altus it was home to mow the yard and check on the chiggers before heading to the Dakotas for the summer.
