It was a welcome relief from the July heat to arrive in the forests of Colorado.Grizz and I caravanned west to explore the rivers of Colorado with fly rods in hand. We spent a night in Westcliff by the city park and then stopped at Ringon State Park near Salida but didn't have any luck fishing the Arkansas River. They requested that fishing end at noon so as not to stress the fish in the low water conditions.
Gunnison National Forest campground located on the Gunnison River between Gunnison and Almont seemed the perfect location to stay and fish in that area. The river was a stone's throw from the rv but hard to wade.
The East River flowed alongside the highway north of Almont between Almont and Crested Butte. Parking at the Roaring Judy fish hatchery provided access to some good spots for brown and rainbow trout.
Kayaking on the Spring Creek Reservoir was a good idea but the windy day upon arrival prevented the outing.
Fishing on the beautiful Spring Creek that meandered through the valley below the reservoir turned out to be a better plan.
This trout struggles to get free and soon he was freed.
The
Taylor River flows from the east into Almont where the Taylor and East Rivers meet to form the Gunnison. The area below Taylor Reservoir has trophy trout that know how to avoid being caught. Made several trips through the road construction to fish this river. There were some nice pullout spots alongside the road and plenty of people fishing below the reservoir.
