Sylvan Lake was a great day trip in Custer State Park. There were several hiking trails in the area and magnificent scenery.

I chose the steep 2.8 mile Sunday Gulch Trail which wound downhill among giant boulders.

There were hand rails along the way where they weren't washed away from gushing waters that followed this trail in heavy rains. The rocks were so slippery that a handrail was a must. The people coming back up the trail obviously didn't make it to the end as it turned out to be a loop trail that was not so steep on the return. Along the trail, which followed a small stream, there was lush green vegetation and small waterfalls.
