Lake Fausse Pointe, La - Mar 2003
30 FreeRoaders met at Lake Fausse Point State Park near St. Martinville, La for one week to visit with old friends and meet new.
The azaleas were in full bloom, a welcome sign of spring.
Darlene enjoys listening to the Doucet Brothers who are playing under the Evangeline Oak in St. Martinville.
The yellow jasmine was in full bloom in LA as were the tulip trees. The seeds of the red swamp maples provided red highlights amid the fresh spring green of the budding trees.
St. Martinville was only one of many places various groups of FreeRoaders visited. There was also Avery Island, New Iberia, Lake Martin, Jeanerette, McGee's swamp tour of the Atchafalya Basin, the Evangeline Center. And always a group stayed at the campground as FreeRoaders tend to return to Lake Fausse Pointe and many had already seen the sites and especially enjoyed visiting.
Turtles were found throughout the campground, which usually happens when FreeRoaders gather.
The party was complete with a turtle balloon, our mascot!
Don passes out buttons to Moe, Diane and Kay while Clark wonders if he has room for one more.
In 1999 this park is where the FreeRoaders was formed from a different solo group that many belonged to.
The cardinals are well-fed in the park all winter. It is always a delight to see so many flitting through the park. Homemade feeders suffice quite well.
Clark, Marion and Brenda relax in the park.
Most gathered with coffee each morning to visit or make a plan.
Don proving he can still roll along on his new rollerblades!
Gypsy Joan greets Kay, Marcia, and Moe with a homemade glow worm.
Ann (FreeLoader), Ethlemae, Ardie, Vi, Marley and Robbie at happy hour.
Cardinals, turtles, and owls seem to be everywhere.

FreeRoaders don't always eat out ... In the campground we enjoyed crawfish, gumbo, hobo stew, nanaimo bars, cake, shrimp, oysters ... and the list goes on. But we did visit some fine restaurants and bakeries also.
Susan cooking crawfish !!! I actually was posing in New Iberia where I picked up the crawfish dinner.
Philma, Robbie, Clark, Elaine, Joan and Barb sample boiled crawfish ..... and spicy vegetables!!

Mary Lou grilling her shrimp
Ranger Larry offered to put together a canoe trip for FreeRoaders. Many were novices but everyone did quite well and all enjoyed the trip. This is not a stream with a current, as some of us are used to, but rather a network of canals, sloughs, and a lake where the beauty of nature can be enjoyed.
On the afternoon trip we went down the barrow canal and were delighted to see many small alligators.
In the morning we paddled among the cypress trees, a most serene setting.
Moe watches at a happy hour while Larry shows us various skulls and pelts of animals indigenous to the area.
As I was leaving, Mark, Larry and I decided to go geocaching. Mark locates his first cache. They were a bit skeptical about geocaches in the state park and wanted to see what it was all about.
