Kerrville, Tx - Oct 2003

Kerrville Schreiner State Park near Kerrville was a good place for camping and enjoying nature. The flowers were in full bloom in the butterfly garden and deer were all around. There were several nice hiking trails among the junipers.

The Guadalupe River runs through the town and a walk in the park in Kerrville was a great way to enjoy the beautiful river.

Kerrville was the site for the October cookout of the Hill Country Chapter of the Texas Dutch Oven Group. Everyone arrived at 10 and did his/her own thing until all the food was assembled for a meal at noon. Alice and Betty seemed quite accustomed to cooking this way.

Lunch was served promptly and all of the dishes were lined up for a potluck.

The cooking and patio area of our hosts was a dream. Notice the fancy ironwork used for a table decoration.

This is the dutch oven cooking area on their patio.

Quiet Valley Ranch is a campground located 9 miles south of Kerrville where I met up with the WINs, a singles' camping group. I was delighted to see old friends and meet new ones. The campground was rather strange place on the hillside in scrub brush and limestone. Some of the yearly residents were there along with the WINs. They often have large groups come in for music concerts. This sign made me feel right at home and I couldn't wait to try to duplicate it when I got home.

From Kerrville there are several nice drives through the hill country but unexpected were the stone replicas of another time and place that are alongside highway 27 outside of Ingram.

Lost Maples State Park is noted for the big tooth maple. Most leaves are less than 4 inches across and have less than 12 teeth around the edges.

There are several nice hiking trails in the park. One ends at this crossing on the Sabinal River.
