Port Lavaca is located on Matagorda Bay about 10 miles north of Indianola and Magnolia Beach. The present site was laid out in 1843, although it was already a prosperous port, shipping thousands of bales of cotton each year. Seven large wharves extended into deep water to accommodate steamships, barges, brigs and schooners to take care of the large export and import trade, mainly consisting of cotton, hides, tallow and cattle. As Texas settled further north and west goods were brough by boat to points along the coast and transported by wagon into the interior.

The campground is run by the city. There is a nice beach also. The old lighted fishing pier across the bay had burned twice and then part of it was lost to a hurricane

The birdwalk was built entirely from recycled plastics - milk cartons specifically. It leads from the campground out among the edge of the estuary on Matagorda Bay.

The Half Moon Reef lighthouse was at the southern tip of Half Moon Reef in Matagorda Bay. It was placed into service in 1858 and was typical of 19th century lighthouses constructed for inland waters. The first floor was about 10 ft. above sea level. The light was extinguished in Woarld War II and never reactivated. It was moved in 1943 to Point Comfort and then in 1978 it was conveyed to the Calhoun County Historical Commission and restored. It sits in front of the Chamber of Commerce building.
